- New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays
The top teams in the American League butt heads at Tropicana Field this weekend. The New York Yankees held a 1.5-game lead on the Tampa Bay Rays heading into Thursday's schedule.
New York had won seven of its last 10 games as of its finale with the Cleveland Indians, but the real story is Alex Rodriguez's futile effort to hit his 600th career home run. Alex Rodriguez was homerless in six straight games since knocking No. 599 out of the park against the Kansas City Royals last week. Despite the lack of long balls, A-Rod is batting .333 with eight RBI in the past week.
Tampa Bay has won six straight games heading into this weekend's series, closing the gap between them and New York. The Rays swept four games against the Detroit Tigers this week, outscoring their opponents 19-8 for the series. Tampa Bay is 30-20 at home this season and has spit its eight meeting with the Bronx Bombers this season, including losing two of three games inside Tropicana Field back in April.
- Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels were expected to give the Texas Rangers a run for their money in the second half of the schedule. However, L.A. has fallen off the wagon in recent weeks, losing eight of its last 10 games heading into Friday and sitting 8.5 games behind the Rangers in the American League West.
The Halos were swept by the Boston Red Sox this week, scoring just eight total runs in that series. Los Angeles is batting just .211 over the past week with most of its bats struggling. Second baseman Howie Kendrick is stuck in one of the biggest slumps, hitting .130 over the past seven days. Kendrick has been one of the Angels' best hitters with runners in scoring position, but this slump has stunted their run production.
Texas wrapped a three-game set against the Oakland A's on Thursday night, and had won seven of its last 10 outings. The Rangers have won six of their nine meetings with the Halos this season but dropped two of three to Los Angeles at Angel Stadium back in late June. Texas has won 5.37 units for MLB moneyline odds bettors on the road this season.
